mY GROWTH jOURNEY

My Buffet Year transformation in action.

I used my Buffet Year commitment to try a new hobby or experience every day to design a new life.  One year after launching Buffet Year, I’ve gone from feeling stuck and unmotivated to finding greater passion and joy every day. While the things I tried ranged from things that didn’t interest me at all such as needlepoint to things that made me VERY uncomfortable, I found new passions in guitar and yoga. I still approach every new experience with Eckart Tolle's modalities in mind: acceptance, enjoyment, or enthusiasm. You can try a Buffet Year too.

PIVOT…PIVOT! waTCH ME PIVOT

My vision for Buffet Year and the impact I wanted to have expanded beyond my wildest dreams. I launched a media agency that is affordable and it helps people who are doing new things, growing new businesses, and stepping outside of their comfort zone and find their perfect clients. All of this gives our clients more time freedom.

rEGISTERED yOGA tEACHER 200 hR

Although I'm not a woman and don't have a man bun, I started yoga teacher training (a 200-hour program) to become certified through Yoga Alliance. I was tired of being stiff and tight and lacking mobility. When the body doesn't get touched and doesn't get oxygenated blood it begins to atrophy and decay. Who wants that?

A Transformative Journey

Leading a HypnoBreathwork session at a yoga studio was nothing short of extraordinary. Attendees shared a heightened sense of self-awareness, profound relaxation, and a release of stored tension. Businesses can benefit from this work as well.

Bali Day

I tell myself traveling as a 20-year-old I felt invincible, but there is a possibility that I don't remember correctly...

So of course I'm excited for a "once in a lifetime opportunity" to go to Ubud, Bali and it also activates those butterflies in my stomach which can either be chalked up to being excited and/or nervous.

The weekend update

How many new things did you intentionally try this past weekend?

My new thing on Friday was leaning up against the building and puking at a group fitness class. :)

Day 45: TeamWerk

Have you ever done a group workout at 6 am before? I wanted to break outside my consciousness and regular thought patterns on things to try so I reached out to Amy Strand Miller. She mentioned Mark’s class at Infit. I felt some resistance to reaching out to Amy and Mark to ask if I could join. That’s how I knew I had to say yes.

Day 44: Community healing

When really being brave, tough, and strong is to confront these things that a lot of women are doing.  I don’t want to speak for all men, but I do think that for the men that are coming “online” (meaning they are exploring their subconscious brain - the 95% that is on autopilot), these men feel frustrated and lonely that nobody understands what they are going through.  However,  people can only show up for you to the degree that you are willing to be vulnerable with them.  If you act like a tough guy all the time and act like you don’t need anyone then nobody can understand you.  You can’t have it both ways.

Day 43: Hot boy summer

The boys are living their best life. Mason hit 2 or 3 parks yesterday while Brooks was at his chemistry class where he made ice cream. After that, they went bowling because the local bowling center offers kids 2 free games per day with purchase of the shoes. They also got to play outside and Mason got to ride his new bike and he started soccer last night. It was a very busy and full day. They were tuckered last night. Here’s to summer! I hope you have a great one!

Day 42: Build a bike

Even without Buffet Year, I would’ve spent the time building Mason’s bike. But the cool thing is that even the mundane “new things” are reframed through the lens of my Buffet Year commitment. I am doing new things daily - some may be adventurous, some may be spiritually fulfilling and some activities are downright boring, but by seeing it through my commitment to Buffet Year, I can more clearly see the growth and learning that comes from it all.

Day 41: Be the leader

Have you ever led a group through an exercise or a breathwork session?  Today I led a group through a HypnoBreathwork® session.  If you would have told me a year ago or even 3 months ago I would have said what are you talking about or no fucking way.

My first experience with it wasn’t until March 26, 2023 at the Yoga Deck in San Diego.  That was the first time I met Francesca Sipma.  Now here I am not even 3 months later and I’m certified in this modality and I’m leading a group session.

Day 40: Mason’s 7th Birthday

When I went to go pick up lunch today Bree, my mother in law, and the boys went to a garage sale and the boys saw a kids guitar. They wanted to buy it because they said dad is taking guitar lessons. I thought that was special and it made me feel good. It made me feel like I inspired my kids. As parents, don't we want to do more of that? I think it is important.

Day 39:  30 Minutes of Bliss

I had my very first guitar lesson with Sheridan at the Rogers School of Music. I feel like this should make up for not doing traditionally “new” things on days 36-38 (even though I did a lot that was new to me but not “fun” new), especially since I have had my guitar for 5 years and it has just sat in the corner. A 30 minute guitar lesson goes by so fast, but it was a much needed break from the monotony of the week.

Days 34 to 38: When Shit Hits the Fan, Dig deeper

There are reasons/excuses but also some very valid conditions. With everything going on last week I just didn’t have a lot of bandwidth to handle much more. Between modules for Powerful Leader Mastery, 15 hours of CE credits, trips to the pool store and working on the pool and all the other shit I legitimately think I was at my capacity or edge. And perhaps even in sitting on that edge, I learned a lot about myself and my capacity to deal with hard things.

Day 33: Childhood Card reconnect

Today is Day 33 of #mybuffetyear.  Did you collect sports cards as a kid?  Most people I have come across collect some kind of cards whether it’s baseball, football, Pokemon, etc.  My youngest son asked me why I had so many baseball and basketball cards.  I told him it was because when I was in elementary school those were the sports I played.  I also had a deck of CMA country music cards.  I don’t recall how or when I received those, but it was cool to see some 90’s country stars like Joe Diffie and Diamond Rio.  I also had a Willie Nelson card.  Tonight was a sports memorabilia or nostalgia night.

Day 32: AL Borland would be jealous

Day 32: No more No Mow May. Word to the wise- your local Ace Hardware Store and Home Depot don’t carry the kit.  Once I had all the tools and the kit, installing all the things from the kit took another 2.5 hours.  It probably took longer because it was my first time.  It was so rewarding once it was done and when I was finally able to cut the grass after No Mow May.

Day 31: HandyMan for a Day

Are you a handy person? I am not. I hate that I label myself that, but I think it’s more true than not. I haven’t exposed myself to enough handy experiences. I had a realization that I did it to myself a long time ago. It was in 6th grade. In 6th grade, I had all A’s except for a B in Industrial Tech. The hood on my tin truck was fucking crooked. My gumball machine was a little bit better but not as good as some of the other kids. It’s interesting though because the kids that were talented in that class generally didn’t seem to apply themselves in other classes. I allowed that B to crush me.

Day 30: Do the damn thing

Time is extremely precious. I want and I need to be more intentional with my time. We all have messes to clean up. Let’s clean up the messes and stop making messes along the way. I am referring to relationship messes. It all starts with writing a letter and then having a conversation. You won’t be able to control the outcome, but at least you will be able to make some mental space.

Day 29: I tied a third grader

On the 18th hole Brooks made a 16-20 ft putt for bogey and I made an 8 ft putt for bogey.  We got home and Bree added up the scores.  Par on this course was 59.  Bree added up Brooks score first.  He ended up with 90.  Bree adds up my score, also 90.  I tied a 3rd grader.

Day 28: Get Torched

If you're an avid gardener or look after your landscaping then you know that maintenance seems to be a never-ending and tedious task.  From weeding to pruning, there's always something that needs to be done. But what if there was a tool that could make your gardening or landscaping tasks a lot easier and more efficient? Enter the weed torch – a must-have tool for any gardener/landscaper looking to simplify their maintenance routine. Today my dad brought his weed torch over and showed me how to use it.

Day 27: Whatever floats your boat

What do you usually do for Memorial Day weekend?  Do you usually do the same thing every year?  I know Buffet Year is about trying new things, but if there is a family cabin you go to every year that’s cool- that’s a tradition.  Plus Buffet Year is about no judgments so I don’t care if your plans were to strip and go naked this weekend.
