Day 29: I tied a third grader

Today is Day 29 of #mybuffetyear. Do find golf enjoyable?  Golf is a sport that requires skill, strategy, and patience. For some, it's a relaxing pastime, while for others, it's a competitive challenge, and for people like me just an overall challenge because I am competitive. I struggle with patience and get frustrated by my shitty shots. Today my 9 year old wants to golf 18 holes.  We’ve never done that before and today we are keeping score.

I’ve attempted to keep score in the past and ultimately say fuck it after shooting an 8 on a par 3.  I committed to not doing that today no matter how bad it gets.  I teed off on the first hole and my ball went into the drink.  I knew my patience was going to be tested.  It was my first outing of the year. I shot a 7 on a par 3.  Brooks shot a 6 after taking a couple mulligans on the first hole.  When I was putting on the second hole by ball hit the cup and bounced out.  Easy big fella!  Brooks was recording me and started laughing.  You can check out the video on Instagram.

Brooks and I were neck and neck most of the day, which says a lot about my skill level, but hey I’m obviously no Michael Block.  Brooks was getting frustrated and ultimately choose to take a hole off.  I think it was 11 or 12.  So we didn’t count those strokes for our head to head competition.  I was super proud of him that he got his head back in the game and didn’t quit because he wanted to be done.  I can’t blame him by that point we had already been golfing for 2 hours.  We started to total up our strokes with about 4 or 5 holes left.  I thought I was up 2 strokes with 2 holes left.  Come to find out I added wrong and was only up by 1.

With 2 holes left he wanted to have a friendly wager on who would win.  If he won he wanted 2 boxes of football cards.  I asked him the going price for a box of football cards.  He said $25.  I was like $50 that’s way too much!!  We ended up agreeing on one box of football cards and if I won he would have to pay for $25 of lunch at the clubhouse.  On the 17th hole, I teed off and put the ball in the drink again.  Of course, he tees off and hits it nice and straight.  I take a penalty stroke and have a nice long chip shot on the green.  Brooks ended up getting a par 3 on the 17th hole and I ended up getting a bogey.  At the time I thought I was up by 1 still, but my Coon Rapids math skills are no good.  JK!  On the 18th hole Brooks made a 16-20 ft putt for bogey and I made an 8 ft putt for bogey.  We got home and Bree added up the scores.  Par on this course was 59.  Bree added up Brooks score first.  He ended up with 90.  Bree adds up my score, also 90.  I tied a 3rd grader.
