Day 21: Buy me a Birria
Today is Day 21 of #mybuffetyear. Bree and I just wrapped up our 4th day of HypnoBreathwork® Certification. The days were pumped full of material and growth. It feels like it was a chaotic weekend of sorts. Saturday the boys were with Kayden all day and Sunday our youngest had a strep test and our oldest went to a birthday party. Almost no time was reserved for household chores or preparation for a new week. Since it’s “birthday week” for my wife we did what any logical couple would do and ordered Mexican food from a different spot called Mucho Loco.
I ordered Birria for the first time. I didn’t know what that was until we sat down with Knute with Perfect Exteriors of Minnesota a couple weeks ago. For those of you unfamiliar with Birria, it’s a Mexican dish were the meat is marinated in an adobo made of vinegar, dried chiles, garlic, and herbs and spices before being cooked in a broth. This isn’t official culinary speak, but here is what I experienced. It’s like the tortilla was dipped in oil or fat and then fried on a pan. This particular restaurant also sent a cup of the broth to dip the taco. It’s like aus jus.
I really enjoyed Birria. Either is was super good or I was super hungry. It’s something I probably wouldn’t have tried without my conscious commitment to Buffet Year. I wonder how many opportunities we miss to find joy in something new because we judge it before we even try it. I’m really looking forward to trying Birria at other restaurants. Particularly at Taqueria El Primo which is ones of Knute’s favorite restaurants that serves Birria. It’s on Lake Street and Cedar in South Minneapolis. If you have been there and tried it please let me know. I would love to know your favorite Mexican restaurant and dish. It doesn’t have to be confined to just Minnesota. Blanco is my favorite and that’s in Scottsdale.
