Day 8: Teacher Trouble
Today is Day 8 of #mybuffetyear. Buffet Year is about jumping outside your comfort zone, doing random acts of kindness, and stepping into the shoes of another individual on this planet Earth. Can you imagine being a teacher nowadays? Budget cuts, big class sizes, oh my! I mentioned that to my 9-year-old a couple of weeks. I said, “Can you imagine being a teacher nowadays”? I rattled off all the things. He said, “But they chose that career.” I said, “Yes they chose that career, but they didn’t choose the disrespect and the uphill battle that goes along with it.” I wanted to live vicariously through a kindergarten teacher for an hour so I did just that.
I had to be at the elementary school at 9:45 am. First, I had to make a #targetrun. I swear since I’ve started Buffet Year going to Target has been almost a daily occurrence. I’m thinking if they don’t become a sponsor soon I might need to shop elsewhere. The class is counting down the alphabet until summer vacation. When I went in the class was on letter D so I grabbed 2 bags of Dum-Dums. Since Dum-Dums are free from the top food allergens it is the perfect treat. I also picked up 3-12 packs of glue sticks, which the teacher said would probably be gone in 2 weeks.
After I checked in with the office and put my name badge on I headed to class. Immediately, a couple of kids asked how old I am. I wonder if I look really old or if they ask everyone to try to place them in some sort of box. It makes sense, these kids are trying to understand the complicated world we live in today. Once we got my age and introduction out of the way I read Click, Clack, Peep by Doreen Cronin. It is such a cute book. My favorite is probably still Click, Clack, Moo but this one was perfect because they are waiting for the baby chicks to hatch in their classroom. In fact, while I was there one of the chicks started pecking through the egg. After that, they did a couple of art projects that were really cute.
I had a lot of fun and the hour went by really fast. However, I can’t imagine doing it for a day let alone as a career. You have to have so much patience and pretty much be a school nurse. For instance, when I was there a little girl sneezed and got snot all in her hair. I was attempting to help out so I asked the teacher for Kleenex, but when the teacher saw what it was in reference to she pretty much was like we are going to use Clorox wipes. This brings me around to what I originally stated: teachers signed up to be educators not to clean up bodily functions. God must have a special place for teachers in Heaven. You are all incredible!
