Day 1: May Day - Buffet Day

Today I started #mybuffetyear.  Happy Buffet Day!  And, Happy May Day!  I want to get into the habit of drawing from a hat so each new experience is a surprise, but today I chose to start with a random act of kindness by making a May Day Basket for the kids in our neighborhood.  Also, neighborhood and community are similar since a neighborhood is in a community and Buffet Year is also about community.  Buffet Year is a movement of positivity, peace, and joy.  Can’t we all use some more of that?

I pulled out 3 plastic buckets and one small cardboard box that ended up wind-blown in the neighbor's yard so Hudson and Peyton had to do a scavenger hunt for their May Day items.  Sorry about that!  Note to self: add balloon weights on a windy day!  Then I did a #targetrun for some items.  I picked up a bag of ring pops and a mixed bag of candy that had Hershey's bars, Reese’s peanut butter cups, and Mr. Goodbar.  When I got home my wife and kids helped put the “baskets” together.  We added some ring pops, candy, Gatorade, stickers, and other snacks.

My kids are the first ones in the neighborhood to get off the bus because all the other kids go to different schools.  So we were set up pretty well and had ample time to put the baskets together and then go deliver them.  It was fairly windy today in Minnesota with wind gusts between 20 and 30 miles per hour.  It was definitely strong enough to blow a box with two Gatorades in it.  In hindsight, I just have thought about that a little more but I was more concerned with getting the baskets done and delivered without getting caught.

We delivered the 4 baskets to a total of 8 kids without getting caught.  Although, my neighbor Angie texted my wife and asked if we were the May Day fairies.  My wife did confess to it.  I wonder if one of my neighbors was working from home or if their Ring security system picked me up.  I think we also got caught by caught by our neighbors Marianne and Ryan who have three kids down the street.  I say that because Marianne came down and gave a May Day paper bag of goodies to my oldest son Brooks.  That was very sweet and I hope he said thank you.  He sure demolished whatever was in there so I know he loved it.  I think there was a Little Debbie snack in there along with some other treats.

It was really fun to do something nice for other people as a family.  It makes me think we should incorporate more of that as a family and be really intentional about it.  We could spend an hour every Sunday doing something good to spread love and joy.  I have been thinking a lot about the third yama which is Asteya which is nonstealing.  With that yama, there is a concept presented that everything we take from the universe we should give back.  Therefore if we are blessed then we should bless other people and spread the love.  Again, it was a wonderful thing to do as a family.  Thank you so much to my wife and kids for helping me pull it off.  Not only was it fun and we got to connect as a family, but we spread some joy and happiness on a random Monday night and we kept the tradition of May Day baskets alive.  100 years from now the world needs to still know about May Day baskets, don’t they?  I feel like we need all the love, joy, and happiness we can get nowadays.  I think we can all agree on that.  Thanks for reading Buffy’s.  Peace, love, and joy.  You got this. You are doing a great job!
